The role of a School Governor

The main role of the governing body is to help raise the standards and performance of the school by supporting the work of the Executive Headteacher and the staff. Governors will support and, at the same time, challenge the Executive Head and Heads of School by gathering views, asking questions and deciding what is best for the school. Governors make important decisions on policies and strategies and have to stand by their decisions. The governing body is answerable to parents and the wider community. Governors are required to play an active part in the decision making process of the school, getting involved in real issues.
Governors’ roles cover the following areas:

  • Strategic – agreeing the aims and values of the school: setting a policy on the curriculum; setting budgets and approving school development plans; and responding to inspection plans and publishing action plans.
  • Monitoring – making sure that the school keeps to the policies, budgets and plans and keeps up to date with the quality and educational standards in the school.
  • Executive – taking direct responsibility for the recruitment of senior staff and some disciplinary matters.
  • Accountability – making sure parents are kept informed about what is happening in the school and taking parents views into account, and
  • Supporting – supporting and advising the Executive Headteacher and Heads of School and providing practical help and skill.
